Q69PhotosynthesisDec 2024 S2 · Part B · 2 marks, −0.5

Which one of the following statements represents correct sequence of events during electron transport chain from P680 to P700 in a light reaction of photosynthesis in a typical plant?

  1. 1Plastocyanin – Plastoquinone A – Plastoquinone B – Cytochrome b6f complex – Pheophytin
  2. 2Plastocyanin – Cytochrome b6f complex – Plastoquinone A – Plastoquinone B – Pheophytin
  3. 3Pheophytin – Plastoquinone A – Plastoquinone B – Cytochrome b6f complex – Plastocyanin
  4. 4Pheophytin – Cytochrome b6f complex – Plastoquinone A – Plastoquinone B – Plastocyanin
Show answer and solution
Answer: (3) Pheophytin – Plastoquinone A – Plastoquinone B – Cytochrome b6f complex – Plastocyanin

Electrons leave P680 for pheophytin, then pass to the bound plastoquinone QA and the mobile QB. Reduced plastoquinone hands them to the cytochrome b6f complex, and the soluble copper protein plastocyanin carries them across the lumen to P700. Only option 3 has that order.

Q50PhotosynthesisJun 2024 S2 · Part B · 2 marks, −0.5

Which one of the following is the strongest oxidizing agent produced during photosynthesis?

  1. 1NADPH
  2. 2P680+
  3. 3Ferredoxin
  4. 4P700+
Show answer and solution
Answer: (2) P680+

When P680 gives up an electron it becomes P680+, with a redox potential of about +1.2 V. That is the strongest biological oxidant known, and the only one able to take electrons from water at the oxygen-evolving complex. NADPH and reduced ferredoxin are reductants. P700+ is a much weaker oxidant, at about +0.5 V.

Q43PhotosynthesisFeb 2022 S1 · Part B · 2 marks, −0.5

Photochemically generated ATP is consumed in which one of the following phases of Calvin-Benson cycle?

  1. 1Only carboxylation
  2. 2Only regeneration
  3. 3Carboxylation and reduction
  4. 4Reduction and regeneration
Show answer and solution

Answer: (4) Reduction and regeneration

The Calvin–Benson cycle has three phases. Carboxylation (RuBisCO fixing CO2 onto RuBP) uses no ATP. Reduction uses ATP at phosphoglycerate kinase and NADPH at glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase. Regeneration uses ATP at phosphoribulokinase to remake RuBP. So ATP is consumed in reduction and regeneration.

Q33PhotosynthesisJun 2024 S1 · Part B · 2 marks, −0.5

Which one of the following is a correct combination of four carbon intermediates formed during C4 photosynthesis in plants?

  1. 1Malate and Aspartate
  2. 2Aspartate and Alanine
  3. 3Phosphoenolpyruvate and Oxaloacetate
  4. 4Alanine and Pyruvate
Show answer and solution

Answer: (1) Malate and Aspartate

In C4 plants PEP carboxylase fixes HCO3− into oxaloacetate, which is quickly turned into malate (NADP-ME type) or aspartate (NAD-ME and PEPCK types) for transport to the bundle sheath. Both are four-carbon acids. Alanine, pyruvate and PEP are three-carbon compounds, so option 1 is the only pair of C4 intermediates.

Q41Respiration & PhotorespirationDec 2023 S2 · Part B · 2 marks, −0.5

In which one of the following organelles does glycine decarboxylase complex and serine hydroxymethyltransferase convert two molecules of glycine into one molecule of serine during photorespiration?

  1. 1Endoplasmic reticulum
  2. 2Chloroplast
  3. 3Mitochondria
  4. 4Peroxisome
Show answer and solution

Answer: (3) Mitochondria

Two glycines arriving from the peroxisome are handled in the mitochondrial matrix. Glycine decarboxylase releases CO2 and NH3 from one glycine, and serine hydroxymethyltransferase adds the remaining C1 unit to the second glycine, giving one serine. This is where photorespiration loses CO2.

Q101Respiration & PhotorespirationFeb 2022 S2 · Part C · 4 marks, −1

Following are certain statements regarding photorespiration pathway in plants:

  1. A. The first two-carbon (2C) compound synthesized by the action of Rubisco in the chloroplast is glycolate.
  2. B. Glycolate exits the chloroplast and enters peroxisomes.
  3. C. Glycolate that is synthesized during C2 cycle enters the chloroplast from mitochondria.
  4. D. Glycine is transported from peroxisomes to mitochondria.

Which one of the following combinations is INCORRECT?

  1. 1A and B only
  2. 2A and C only
  3. 3B, C and D
  4. 4A, C and D
Show answer and solution

Answer: (2) A and C only

Statement A is wrong: RuBisCO’s oxygenase reaction makes 2-phosphoglycolate, which a phosphatase then converts to glycolate. Statement C is wrong too: the molecule that re-enters the chloroplast is glycerate, coming from the peroxisome, not glycolate from the mitochondrion. B and D are correct steps. The incorrect pair is A and C.

Q103Nitrogen MetabolismJun 2023 S1 · Part C · 4 marks, −1

The following statements are made regarding the nitrogenase enzyme involved in the reduction of atmospheric nitrogen to ammonia:

  1. A. Nitrogenase enzyme is composed of two components: dinitrogenase and dinitrogenase reductase.
  2. B. MoFe protein component is a homodimer.
  3. C. Fe protein component is dinitrogenase.
  4. D. MoFe protein contains the active site metal cluster where N2 binds.
  5. E. Fe protein delivers electron to MoFe protein component in a reaction coupled to the hydrolysis of MgATP.

Which one of the following options represents the combination of all correct statements?

  1. 1A, B and D
  2. 2B and C only
  3. 3C, D and E
  4. 4A, D and E
Show answer and solution

Answer: (4) A, D and E

Nitrogenase has two parts. The Fe protein is dinitrogenase reductase (so C is wrong). It passes electrons to the MoFe protein, dinitrogenase, hydrolysing two MgATP per electron (E). The MoFe protein holds the FeMo cofactor where N2 binds (D). It is an α2β2 heterotetramer, not a homodimer (so B is wrong). A, D and E are correct.

Q40Sensory PhotobiologyDec 2023 S2 · Part B · 2 marks, −0.5

The mobile signal, florigen, that controls the flowering status of the plants is encoded by which one of the following?

  1. 1Flowering locus C (FLC)
  2. 2Flowering locus D (FD)
  3. 3Flowering locus T (FT)
  4. 4CONSTANS (CO)
Show answer and solution

Answer: (3) Flowering locus T (FT)

FLOWERING LOCUS T encodes the FT protein. It is made in leaf phloem companion cells when CONSTANS builds up under inductive day lengths, and it travels through the phloem to the shoot apex. There it partners FD to switch on floral identity genes. CO and FD are needed for flowering, but they are not the mobile signal. FLC is a repressor.

Q40Sensory PhotobiologyJun 2023 S2 · Part B · 2 marks, −0.5

The flowering repressor gene that is responsible for the vernalization requirement in Arabidopsis is:

  1. 1CONSTANS (CO)
  2. 2FLOWERING LOCUS D (FD)
  3. 3FLOWERING LOCUS T (FT)
  4. 4FLOWERING LOCUS C (FLC)
Show answer and solution

Answer: (4) FLOWERING LOCUS C (FLC)

FLOWERING LOCUS C is a MADS-box repressor that blocks FT and SOC1. Winter-annual Arabidopsis carries active FRIGIDA, which keeps FLC high, so the plant cannot flower until prolonged cold silences FLC epigenetically (Polycomb, H3K27me3). That silencing is vernalization. CO, FT and FD all promote flowering.

Q64Plant HormonesDec 2024 S2 · Part B · 2 marks, −0.5

Which of the following phytohormone signaling pathways are evolutionarily related to bacterial two-component regulatory systems?

  1. 1Cytokinin and ethylene
  2. 2Brassinosteroid and auxin
  3. 3Auxin and cytokinin
  4. 4Brassinosteroid and strigolactone
Show answer and solution

Answer: (1) Cytokinin and ethylene

The cytokinin receptors (AHK2, AHK3, CRE1/AHK4) are histidine kinases that start a His–Asp phosphorelay through AHP proteins to type-B ARR response regulators. That is a bacterial two-component system. The ethylene receptors (ETR1, ERS1 and others) also descend from bacterial histidine kinases. Auxin, brassinosteroid and strigolactone signalling use unrelated receptors.

Q106Plant HormonesDec 2023 S1 · Part C · 4 marks, −1

Given below are the list of plant hormones (Column X) and their biosynthesis precursors (Column Y).

Column XColumn Y
AAuxinsi.Geranylgeranyl diphosphate
BCytokininsii.Adenosine moiety
CEthyleneiii.Tryptophan
DGibberellinsiv.1-aminocyclopropane 1-carboxylic acid

Which one of the following options represents the correct match between column X and Y?

  1. 1A–i; B–ii; C–iii; D–iv
  2. 2A–iii; B–i; C–iv; D–ii
  3. 3A–iii; B–ii; C–iv; D–i
  4. 4A–iv; B–iii; C–ii; D–i
Show answer and solution

Answer: (3) A–iii; B–ii; C–iv; D–i

Auxin (IAA) is made from tryptophan. Cytokinins are adenine derivatives: isopentenyl transferase puts a prenyl side chain on an adenosine phosphate. Ethylene comes from methionine through ACC, by ACC oxidase. Gibberellins are diterpenoids built from geranylgeranyl diphosphate. That gives A–iii, B–ii, C–iv, D–i.

Q46Secondary MetabolitesJun 2024 S2 · Part B · 2 marks, −0.5

How many molecules of acetyl-CoA condense to produce isopentenyl diphosphate, the precursor for the formation of terpenoids by mevalonate pathway?

  1. 1Two
  2. 2Three
  3. 3Four
  4. 4Five
Show answer and solution

Answer: (2) Three

In the mevalonate pathway two acetyl-CoA form acetoacetyl-CoA, and a third adds on to give HMG-CoA. HMG-CoA reductase reduces it to mevalonate, which is phosphorylated twice and decarboxylated to give the C5 unit isopentenyl diphosphate. So three acetyl-CoA go into each IPP.

Q43Secondary MetabolitesJun 2023 S2 · Part B · 2 marks, −0.5

Which one of the following class of plant secondary metabolites is present specifically in the order Brassicales?

  1. 1Glucosinolates
  2. 2Alkaloids
  3. 3Phenolics
  4. 4Terpenoids
Show answer and solution

Answer: (1) Glucosinolates

Glucosinolates (mustard-oil glycosides) are sulfur- and nitrogen-containing compounds almost confined to the order Brassicales: cabbage, mustard, Arabidopsis, capers. When tissue is damaged, myrosinase hydrolyses them to isothiocyanates, the “mustard oil bomb”. Alkaloids, phenolics and terpenoids occur across many plant orders.

Q106Solute Transport & Photoassimilate TranslocationJun 2023 S2 · Part C · 4 marks, −1

The following statements are made regarding materials transported through the phloem of a plant.

  1. A. Only reducing sugars are translocated.
  2. B. Non-reducing sugars are generally translocated.
  3. C. Sucrose and raffinose are generally translocated.
  4. D. Only D-glucose and D-fructose are translocated.

Which one of the following options represents the combination of all correct statements?

  1. 1A, C and D
  2. 2B and C only
  3. 3B and D only
  4. 4A and C only
Show answer and solution

Answer: (2) B and C only

Phloem carries non-reducing sugars, mainly sucrose and, in some families, raffinose-series oligosaccharides (raffinose, stachyose). Reducing sugars such as glucose and fructose have a free aldehyde or ketone group that would react on the long journey, so they are kept out of the sieve tubes. B and C are correct.

Q39Stress Physiology & Plant–Pathogen InteractionsDec 2024 S1 · Part B · 2 marks, −0.5

Which one of the following microbes is an obligate biotroph?

  1. 1Botrytis cinerea
  2. 2Phytophthora infestans
  3. 3Puccinia graminis
  4. 4Trichoderma harzianum
Show answer and solution

Answer: (3) Puccinia graminis

An obligate biotroph can grow only on living host tissue and cannot be cultured on its own. Puccinia graminis, the stem rust fungus, is the classic example. Botrytis cinerea is a necrotroph, Phytophthora infestans is a hemibiotroph, and Trichoderma harzianum is a free-living saprophyte used for biocontrol.

Q42Stress Physiology & Plant–Pathogen InteractionsFeb 2022 S1 · Part B · 2 marks, −0.5

Which of the following ‘R’ gene products do not contain NBS-LRR domain?

  1. 1RPS2 protein of Arabidopsis
  2. 2Xa1 protein of rice
  3. 3N protein of tobacco
  4. 4Mlo protein of barley
Show answer and solution

Answer: (4) Mlo protein of barley

RPS2 (Arabidopsis), N (tobacco, with a TIR domain) and Xa1 (rice) are all NBS-LRR proteins, the usual class of resistance proteins. Barley Mlo is different: it is a seven-transmembrane, calmodulin-binding membrane protein, and powdery-mildew resistance comes from losing it (recessive mlo alleles). It has no NBS or LRR domain.
