Which one of the following features differentiates bacteria from archaea?

  1. 1Presence of a cell wall made up of peptidoglycan
  2. 2Absence of a nuclear membrane
  3. 3Presence of a single circular chromosome
  4. 4Presence of multi-cistronic operons
Show answer and solution
Answer: (1) Presence of a cell wall made up of peptidoglycan

A cell wall of peptidoglycan (murein) is unique to bacteria. Archaeal walls are made of pseudomurein, S-layer proteins or polysaccharides, never peptidoglycan, which is why archaea resist penicillin and lysozyme. Both groups lack a nuclear membrane, usually have one circular chromosome, and organise genes into operons.

Which one of the following plants has a bisporic type of embryo sac development?

  1. 1Allium
  2. 2Oenothera
  3. 3Plumbago
  4. 4Polygonum
Show answer and solution
Answer: (1) Allium

In bisporic development the megaspore mother cell’s first meiotic division gives two cells, one of which degenerates. The surviving dyad cell, with two meiotic nuclei, forms the eight-nucleate embryo sac. That is the Allium type. Polygonum is monosporic (the commonest type), Oenothera monosporic and four-nucleate, and Plumbago tetrasporic.

Which one of the following characteristics is NOT correct for bryophytes?

  1. 1All bryophytes are homosporous.
  2. 2Gametophyte is the dominant phase of the life cycle.
  3. 3The antherozoids are always biflagellate.
  4. 4Water is conducted by hydroids in all bryophytes.
Show answer and solution

Answer: (4) Water is conducted by hydroids in all bryophytes.

Bryophytes are homosporous, their life cycle is dominated by the gametophyte, and their antherozoids are biflagellate. Statement 4 is the incorrect one. Hydroids, dead water-conducting cells, occur only in some mosses (Polytrichales and relatives). Liverworts and hornworts have no such conducting strand.

According to the APG-IV (Angiosperm phylogeny group-IV) which of the following groups of angiosperms first diverged from the common ancestor of the angiosperms?

  1. 1Nymphaeales
  2. 2Monocots
  3. 3Piperales

Select the statement that describes Weberian ossicles.

  1. 1It is found in catfish and facilitates sound transmission from the swim bladder to the inner ear.
  2. 2It is found in sea stars and help them in detecting surface vibrations.
  3. 3It is found in anurans and contributes to transmitting sound waves from the eardrum.
  4. 4It is found in snakes and contributes to receiving vibrations from the surroundings.
Show answer and solution

Answer: (1) It is found in catfish and facilitates sound transmission from the swim bladder to the inner ear.

Weberian ossicles are a chain of small bones derived from the anterior vertebrae. They link the swim bladder to the inner ear in the Ostariophysi (catfishes, carps, characins), so the swim bladder acts as a sound amplifier and these fish hear unusually well.

Q59Principles & Methods of TaxonomyJun 2025 · Part B · 2 marks, −0.5

Under the current rules of taxonomy, which one of the following organismal lineages can legitimately receive genus names either under the ICN or under the ICNP, based on the authors’ choice?

  1. 1Chlorophyta (Green algae)
  2. 2Bacillariophyta (Diatoms)
  3. 3Cyanobacteria (Blue-green algae)
  4. 4Mycetozoa (Slime moulds)
Show answer and solution

Answer: (3) Cyanobacteria (Blue-green algae)

Cyanobacteria are prokaryotes, so the bacteriological code (ICNP) covers them. For historical reasons they are also named as “blue-green algae” under the botanical code (ICN). Authors can therefore publish their genera under either code, an unresolved dual system. Green algae, diatoms and slime moulds are eukaryotes and fall under the ICN only.
